Nigerian Politician's Family on Trial for Alleged Illegal Kidney Transplant Scheme
Description
A Nigerian family accused of plotting to arrange an illegal kidney transplant for their sick daughter has gone on trial at the Old Bailey in London. Beatrice Ekweremadu, her husband Senator Ike Ekweremadu, their daughter Sonia, and medical “middleman” Dr. Obinna Obeta are accused of conspiring to bring a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos to London to exploit him for his organ. It is claimed the young man was falsely presented as Sonia’s cousin in a failed bid to persuade medics to carry out an £80,000 private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital.
The donor was alleged to be paid a financial reward for his kidney, which would have made the transplant unlawful. The family denies the charges against them. Mrs. Ekweremadu told jurors her family meant “everything” to her and that her daughter had become sick after returning home for Christmas in 2019.
She said the family was seeking a solution for her daughter’s illness, adding that they were still “believing in God”. It is alleged that after the donor was rejected by medics at the Royal Free Hospital, the family turned their attention to Turkey and began searching for more donors. The defense barrister asked Mrs. Ekweremadu if she was involved in identifying any donors, to which she replied “no”. The prosecution alleges that the family conspired to exploit a vulnerable young man for his organ, paying him a financial reward for his kidney. The trial continues.
