Russian missile strikes Ukrainian cities resulting in the deaths of six people
Description
Over 80 Russian missiles and a few exploding drones struck residential buildings and critical infrastructure in Ukraine on 9 Mar 202. It led to the deaths of six people and left hundreds of thousands without electricity or heat. The most significant attack in three weeks also posed a risk to Europe's largest nuclear facility by disconnecting it from the power grid for several hours before being restored. Due to the constant power required to operate cooling systems and prevent a potential meltdown, the latest attack on the Zaporizhzhia plant once again raised concerns about the possibility of a nuclear disaster. During the night, air raid sirens blared as the attacks struck a large area of the country, including western Ukraine, which is far from the front lines. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the assault was an effort by Moscow "to intimidate Ukrainians once again." According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the strikes were carried out in response to a recent incursion into the Bryansk region of western Russia by alleged Ukrainian saboteurs. The ministry stated it had successfully targeted all intended objectives, including the destruction of drone bases, disruption of railways, and damage to facilities involved in the manufacturing and repair of weapons. Denying the allegation of an incursion, Ukraine cautioned that Moscow may exploit such claims to rationalize further escalation of its attacks.
