The charges in the international drug bust are dropped, making history
Description
'Project Brisa' resulted in the seizure of drugs worth approximately $61 million, along with 20 arrests and 182 charges. The court dropped all charges related to what was previously known as the "international drug takedown" in the history of the Toronto Police Service on March 7, 2023.
The Public Prosecution Service of Canada has stated that all charges about the widely known "Project Brisa" have stayed. As per the spokesperson for the federal prosecution service, there were no explanations given to the court regarding the decision to stay the charges in this case. In June 2021, the investigators announced the findings of Project Brisa. The six-month probe targeted an international drug-trafficking syndicate, which was involved in transporting over 1,000 kilograms of various drugs such as cocaine, crystal meth, and marijuana.
The smugglers used modified tractor-trailers with concealed compartments to transport the drugs between Mexico, California, and Canada. Harval Bassi, a lawyer who represented individuals associated with the case, expressed gratitude for the result of the proceedings on behalf of his clients. He further added right from the beginning of this complex and unparalleled project, his clients maintained their innocence.
