Women in Istanbul are taking a stand against the ban on protests on International Women's Day
Description
A few days back, I was in Turkey to spend leisure time with my Turkish friends. As a woman, it was inspiring to witness the resilience and determination of my fellow Turkish friends on International Women's Day. On March 8, 2023, despite a ban on protests, thousands of Turkish women gathered in Istanbul on International Women's Day to participate in a "feminist night march." The police stopped the protesters from reaching Taksim Square at the city's center. However, they allowed them to proceed with their demonstration for some time before using tear gas to disperse them. Police arrested a few people during the march. The Republican People's Party released a report during International Women's Day. The report indicates that since 2021, males have killed more than 600 women in Turkey. It happened when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan withdrew the country from the Istanbul Convention. The treaty aims to tackle and prevent domestic violence.
