Zebra Mauls Man's Arm, Deputies Euthanize Animal
Description
On last Sunday evening, deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office in Ohio put down a zebra that had severely mauled a man's arm, almost tearing it off his body. The deputies were called to Circleville, Ohio, just after 5:30 p.m. in response to reports of a zebra attack. In a 911 call, Ronald Clifton, age 72, reported being attacked by a zebra and urgently requested the dispatch of a rescue team. The dispatcher was taken aback and sought confirmation from Clifton if a Zebra attacked him, to which he responded affirmatively.
As per the police report, an officer tried to maneuver his cruiser between Clifton and the zebras. However, a male zebra rushed toward the driver's side door and behaved aggressively. The zebra's behavior was due to its protective instincts toward the group of five or six females in the field.
With the cruiser's siren and air horn, the officer managed to make the zebra retreat. It allowed him to approach Clifton, who had suffered a wound and was bleeding. The deputy then applied a tourniquet just below Clifton's shoulder and, with the aid of another officer, escorted him to an ambulance. The zebra was captured on camera aggressively approaching the deputy. The deputy tried to scare it off three times, but it did not back down. The deputy aimed a shotgun at the zebra's head and fired a slug into its forehead, killing it. The recent incident served as a valuable lesson: when traveling abroad, additional safety measures are essential.
