A man from British Columbia is suing a cadets captain and the government over an alleged rape
Description
A man from British Columbia has alleged that the leader of Cadets Canada sexually assaulted him. He made this claim on March 7, 2023, at the courthouse. The man believes that the organization must confront the "haunting memories" of the past and implement significant changes to safeguard children. Last month, the ex-cadet initiated legal proceedings in the B.C. Supreme Court, claiming that he was conditioned at a camp in the Okanagan. He was sexually assaulted in a Victoria hotel room by a cadet's captain in 1979, when he was only 13 or 14 years old. During the legal proceedings to protect his identity, the plaintiff is only identified as A.B. in the notice of claim, as he has requested anonymity. A.B. revealed that he had reported the alleged assault to the Victoria police "several years ago." Although the case was thoroughly investigated, the Crown ultimately declined to press charges. Nonetheless, he expressed satisfaction with how the police had handled the matter. A.B. pursued a civil claim to bring about systemic change rather than only addressing the single crime and perpetrator. Neither the former cadet leader accused nor the federal government has filed a response. The Department of National Defense oversees the cadet program and declined to comment on the allegations as they are currently under litigation.
