In New York City, a subway platform assault occurred against an autistic teenager

A group of teenagers on a subway platform attacked a 15-year-old boy with autism on March 14, 2023, in Washington Heights. It was caught on camera and has elicited outrage from community activists and officials. On Friday at approximately 5 p.m., an incident occurred at the Subway W. 181 St. and Washington Avenue. The Washington Heights community and local officials are expressing increasing outrage following the circulation of a video showing a gang of teenagers assaulting a 15-year-old autistic boy on a subway platform. On Tuesday afternoon, a mass of people congregated outside the Subway station to protest against bullying and racism. They reported that the victim, a member of a clique known as the 'Transit Kids,' is autistic and belongs to a group of children with developmental disabilities who enjoy riding trains. As per the investigators, the three individuals approached the boy, pulled him from a northbound A train onto the platform, and hurled anti-Black slurs at him. The distressing video displays the group taking turns punching and kicking the boy. Bystanders recorded the assault on their cell phones. According to the police, a young boy, whose identity remains unknown, sustained a laceration on his lip and multiple bruises. The boy was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. During a rally held on Tuesday, community activist Rosemary Severino expressed her disapproval, stating that the incident was unacceptable and caused significant pain. The reason for the assault is unknown, but Eduardo Medellin, who identifies as a "transit kid,' stated that this type of incident is not uncommon.
