Kenya's North Rift sees illegal gun surrender, but banditry persists

According to Rift Valley Commissioner Abdi Hassan, a recent security operation in the North Rift region of Kenya has resulted in the recovery of 20 illegal firearms.
 They recovered the guns in the Samburu and Turkana counties. But no firearm has been retrieved in Baringo.
The Police department has been able to arrest only two suspected bandits so far from the River Turkwel with the recovery of an AK-47 firearm loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition.
The operation became successful after the police acted on this region promptly. President William Ruto issued a three-day ultimatum to illegal gun holders in the area. Some locals have welcomed the deployment of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to help the National Police Service restore peace in the area. But others have raised concerns about the impact of the operation on businesses and the need for more diplomacy and engagement with community leaders. Pokot Council of Elders Chairman Christopher Chochoi implored the government to exercise; diplomacy and engage community leaders. He also suggested that security agencies should map out regions where bandits hide rather than conducting an operation in the whole Tiaty region. The administrator, Hassan, said they were engaging elders and local leaders to ask locals to surrender illegal guns. Also, KDF came into action to restore peace and necessary services to the community. 
A curfew is implemented in this area to restore peace and harmony. The police have already arrested 100 people who have violated this curfew.
