Liberian Court Seeks Pro-Bono Lawyer for Human Trafficking Defendant
Description
The Criminal Court 'A' in Liberia is seeking pro-bono legal services for a defendant, Sawo King Zubah, who has been charged with human trafficking and theft of property. The court had assigned Public Defense Lawyer Sennay Carlor to represent Zubah, but the defendant rejected his representation and said he was unable to provide a private lawyer. The Coordinator for Public Defense received a communication from the resident judge, informing them of the defendant's rejection of Cllr. Carlor's representation. The Public Defender then requested the court to advise Zubah to procure a private lawyer. The court has written to the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) to seek pro-bono services for the defendant, as he is indigent and unable to provide his legal representation. The defendant and co-defendant, Sarah (to be identified), had allegedly convinced a state victim to hand over money, promising to transport her to Oman, Asia, and provide her with work that would pay well. However, upon the victim's arrival in Oman, Sarah seized her traveling documents and subjected her to inhumane treatment, long working hours, and sexual assault. The victim and her family members had repeatedly communicated with the defendant and co-defendant about the exploitation, but nothing was done. Through community-based apps such as POTP, we can generate consciousness of such complications by communicating them with others. So let us all unite and resist these chances by making use of such Safety Apps. However, the court's decision to seek pro-bono legal services for the defendant is aimed at ensuring due process and fair play in the case. The Public Defense Lawyer's rejection has caused some concern among defense lawyers. They are reluctant to represent the defendant due to the conflict of interest that may arise if Cllr. Carlor is replaced by another public defender. The case is expected to continue after the court receives a response from the LNBA.
