Mass shooting at Monterey Park!
Description
As reported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Robert Luna, a shooting in Monterey Park, California, USA, on 01/21/2023 has left at least eleven people dead and another nine wounded.
The suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting is the nation's fifth mass killing this month. It is also the deadliest since May 24, when 21 people died in a Texas school.
This incident began on Saturday night when law enforcement officers received a call about shots fired at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park.
They reached there and found ten wounded people lying outside the studio. They took them to the hospital immediately.
About 20 to 30 minutes later, the suspect entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra. Here, some individuals wrestled the gun away from him, and he fled. The Police Department has recovered a magazine-fed semi-automatic assault pistol with an extended large-capacity magazine from that Alhambra location. The weapon is not legal in California, according to Luna. The suspect was later found dead in a white van in a shopping center parking lot in Torrance. A handgun was lying aside him. Police said there are no other suspects, and a motive for the shooting is still unclear. Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are helping the local police in the investigation.
President Biden considers this a National Issue. He ordered flags to be half-staff until sunset on the following Thursday. The strength of the community is incredible, but this shooting is just another example of the constant stream of gun violence in the United States.
It is time for gun reform at a national level, as stated by California Governor Gavin Newsom.
My Thoughts
This tragic incident is another heart-breaking example of the devastating impact of gun violence in a country. I am not sure what was the reason for this gunshot which ultimately took the lives of many innocent people.
It is crucial to interact about the need for stricter gun laws and better access to mental health resources.
